What is the typical age at dances or in classes?
This is such a hard question to answer, because it really varies. We have had students in junior high, and we have had students in their 70s. Most of our students tend to be in the 20s-50s range. The dances tend to be about the same.

Who runs Swing Des Moines?
Swing Des Moines is run by its Board of Directors. Currently, there are five members on the Board. Directors are elected at the annual Membership meeting each spring.

Do I have to know how to dance to join or to attend dances?
Absolutely not! Each dance is preceded by a half hour free lesson to get you started, and membership is open to anyone interested in swing - not just dancers!

Do I need a partner for dances or classes?
Nope! Swing Des Moines classes all rotate partners, so everyone in the class dances with everyone else. Our dances do not require a partner, either. Approximately half of the attendees at our dances come with a partner, but nearly all of the attendees dance with numerous people during the night. In fact, people have come to Jive Junction from out of state and commented at how sociable our dancers are! Not being asked to dance?

What is the dress code for dances?
All we ask is that you dress tastefully. Some people choose to wear vintage clothes, or vintage-look clothes, but most opt just for jeans, pants, or casual skirts.

What kind of dances are popular at SDSM events?
Most of our dancers dance lindy or east coast. You'll also see a little balboa, some shag, and some charleston. A few folks dance West Coast, as well.
