Capitol City Swing

Capitol City Swing is the performance troupe of Swing Des Moines. The current incarnation of Capitol City Swing has been performing around the Des Moines area for several years.

(Capitol City Swing performing at Living History Farms in 2007.)

Capitol City Swing can provide entertainment for your corporate or charity event, and is equally skilled at giving demonstrations and educational presentations to school or civic groups. We can perform any of the swing dances, including lindy, balboa, shag, charleston, and jitterbug. We can dance with the audience or "warm the dance floor" to encourage social dancing. We can teach lessons to your group, or we can give a talk about the history of the dances, the history of the music, the dancers or musicians of the swing era, or even the fashions popular during that time period. You may view a brief video of our troupe during rehearsals here

Capitol City Swing has also developed a comprehensive program of the History of Swing Dance in the Swing Era, which is an educational and entertaining combination of history and performance spanning the 1920s through the 1950s. The entire program lasts approximately 40 minutes, but can be shortened to suit your needs.

Our Purpose

The goals of Capitol City Swing are to entertain and educate audiences, to help audiences see swing dancing as accessible, and to further our own learning. To this end, we don't wear costumes - we instead dress in vintage or contemporary clothes appropriate to the performance and to our dancing. We don't do a lot of throwing our partners around, as we feel that well-executed ground steps, though perhaps less flashy, are also more attainable. We want you to walk away from our performances saying "WOW! That looked like fun. I want to learn how to dance!" instead of "WOW! That looked like fun, but I could never do that!"

Are you a dancer who wants to join us?

Capitol City Swing members perform at the Des Moines Arts Festival in 2007.

If you are interested in joining our troupe, we will have auditions again in spring 2008. The troupe is fun and casual, with performances year-round. We practice generally once a week, sometimes twice a week if we're getting ready for a performance and need the work. We perform all of the vintage swing dances. We do some whole-group numbers, and then small group numbers, and numbers with just one couple.

All skill levels are welcome, and you do not have to have a partner!

If you have questions, or if you're interested in auditioning or hiring our troupe,  please email us!

Capitol City Swing members perform at a local retirement home.
